PE and Sports

At The Gardens School we have a Director of Sport (Sports Co-ordinator/ Specialist P.E Teacher).  They are responsible for class PE/Health lessons as well as the coordination of our many and varied inter-school sports teams who compete during the year.

P.E is a specialised subject that focuses on learning Fundamental Skills with specific sports coaching.  Students participate in weekly PE lessons of 45 minutes, taken by the specialist teacher or specialist sports coaches.  All P.E lessons are levelled and based on structured Learning Outcomes.

We work alongside Counties Manukau Sport and other outside sport experts and agencies to provide a well-rounded P.E programme across the school.

We have optional weekly ‘Fitness Club’ Sessions for all students, which provide our children with the opportunity to work on their fitness and to develop a lifelong habit of keeping fit and healthy through regular exercise.

Our House Captains run an Inter-House games competition on a regular basis.  This encourages team-work, sportsmanship and school spirit - not to mention the bonus of adding points towards winning our much-coveted House Cup!

Every term, Staff and Students (representative teams) go head-to-head in a variety of games for bragging rights over the “We are the Champions” title!

Annual Events

Cross Country is an annual school event for all students from Year 0 - Year 8, held both at school (0-3) at Totara Park (4-8) at the end of the second term.  Athletics Day is also an annual Event held off-site, providing a fun day of competitive and non-competitive Athletics day activities and events.  This is usually held at Massey Park in Papakura, as children can experience a professional track and field set up.  This is always a fantastic day and another opportunity for our students, staff and even parents to show their house spirit!

Representative Sports

Starting from Year 4, students have the opportunity to trial for and participate in, a wide range of sports played at the inter-school level.  These include (but are not limited to), Rippa-Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball, Ki-O-Rahi, Cricket, Swimming, Cross-Country, Athletics and Badminton.  Teams who are successful at the inter-school competition often go on to the 'Zone' competitions and we have even had a number of teams successfully make it to the Auckland Championships!

School Success

Our sports teams always represent our school well at the MPSSA (Y4-6) and Central Counties (Y7/8) competitions.  We enter all codes, we like to have a go at everything and we can proudly say our reputation precedes us!  We have won the Central Counties Cup many times!
