Literacy at The Gardens
Literacy in English is essential for our students to learn across all areas of our New Zealand Curriculum. The key competencies and all the learning areas depend on our students being able to respond to, and use a variety of forms of language to think, to locate, interpret and evaluate information and communicate.
In order to achieve strong foundations for literacy learning, we take a school wide approach to the teaching of literacy that is informed by current research and the use of quality resources.
We aim to provide appropriate and timely intervention for students who are struggling with literacy.
Our teachers undertake high quality professional development in the teaching of literacy. In 2009 our teachers participated in professional development in First Steps Writing to help us achieve our vision. First Steps Writing supports our belief that as a school we build on the successful learning that is provided in the home by parents and that when parents and teachers work together in partnership, our students will achieve success.
