 Rangitoto

The Rangitoto team started the 2010 year with three classrooms:

Kiwi 1: Brenda MacDonald

Kiwi 2: Mary Steele

Kiwi 3: Robyn Dillon (Team Leader)

And in term 2 added

Pukeko 2: Shona Scott

The students in the Rangitoto team are all in their first year at school. It might be a first for some of the team parents too! Having your first child start school at five is a big transition for everybody. Our five-year-olds continued to arrive in a steady stream all though Term 1 so we don’t think we will be three classes for long.

In our team we are ‘Fostering Foundational Learning’. This is a critically important year for all the children in literacy and numeracy. We will all be striving to set in place a strong foundation in oral language, writing, reading and numeracy. We want the children to have a really good base for future learning. Our expectations are even higher than those set by the National Standards.

Of course we integrate these core subjects into a varied and interesting curriculum because we also want the children to enjoy their learning and have many opportunities to practice their developing skills. Weekly PE is provided by Tania Griffen. The children also have access to Poutama, our purpose built technology area and to our wonderful School Library. Water is the central theme for our curriculum studies in 2010. This allows for a very flexible, dare I say, fluid approach to learning.

In Term 1 the children took part in dance and drama at the Telstra Events Centre and exhibited an artwork at the BAG Arts Festival.

We are all looking forward to an equally exciting second term.
