MARY STEELE
SENCO/Reading Recovery
I was born in Helensville. My dad was a saw-doctor by trade, gaining
his skills working at the family timber mill in Helensville. I spent most of
my formative years moving around the North Island as dad worked mainly
at timber mills. I attended many schools. By the time I was ready to
train as a teacher, my family had moved back to Helensville. So it was
off to the big smoke for me where I attended North Shore Teachers
Training College.
I have taught at many schools around Auckland, the longest stint at
Onehunga Primary where I was Assistant Principal for ten years.
Before coming to work at the Gardens in 2009, I spent five years
teaching in Taranaki. The last two of those years I taught at a little
country school near the mountain – yes, very cold and always windy!
I have two gorgeous adult daughters and my interests are gardening,
walking, swimming, reading and Scottish country dancing.
