PAMELA IRWINHuia 2 (Y7/Y8) Teacher
Born in Gisborne, the early years of my life were spent on a sheep station in the foothills of the Ureweras, miles from anywhere. I went to boarding school in Hawkes Bay, a very spartan, strict experience but one that gave me lifelong friendships and a strength and resilience for which I’m forever grateful.
I attended Waikato University, majoring in French (which I taught over many years) and English Literature, whilst also completing my teacher training.
I then taught in Intermediates in Gisborne, Mangere (a baptism by fire with 42 children, three without a word of English!) and Glen Innes before heading overseas.
I have many passions in life – my family, my profession and all the students I teach, all things French, history, art, music, animals, travel, (I’ve now visited 40 countries but still love NZ the best) … and driving!
Following on from a year of further university studies in 2003, I was invited to lecture on “The Politics and Morality of Education” – however, the call of the classroom proved too strong & I continued to teach at Clevedon School for a further four years before transferring to The Gardens where I am very happy, enjoying both the fascinating students & the brilliantly enthusiastic & supportive staff.
