My association with Manurewa goes back a long way. My rather transient family (I went to five primary schools) moved out of Auckland in 1965 to what then seemed to be a small country town where I attended Manurewa Central School. Our family only lasted six months out in the ‘wopwops’ & I didn’t return to Manurewa, now a growing suburb of Auckland, until 1981. My husband & I returned from our big OE & bought our first house in this area. Our first son Luke was born the following year. But that gypsy blood was calling…Auckland was turning from a big suburb into a city so we shifted out to the Waiuku area so our three children could grow up as we did – roam around freely and only come inside for food & sleep!
My teaching career reflects these moves. I started teaching in urban schools & then small country schools. I have taught in every level of the school & worn many hats in every curriculum area (especially Art & Literacy), Staff PTA/BOT representatives, Deputy Principal & Acting Principal. I then won a study award for Reading Recovery Tutoring & my last ten years has been spent teaching teachers how to work with children struggling with early literacy, working first for Otago & then Auckland Universities. All of this has led me back to Manurewa, to the wonderful children in Kiwi 3 & the amazing staff at The Gardens School. I consider myself very privileged to be part of this school & community.
