Our Principal – Susannah Fowler
I trained as a teacher at Auckland Teachers College after attending secondary school at Rosehill College. I taught in South Auckland schools for two years before heading off overseas.
In 1996, I returned to Brisbane and got a job in the outback of Queensland working with the School of the Air in Winton. After a couple of years of being overly hot and rainless, I went to Cairnsand taught a Gifted and Talented class for two years, in a large primary school.
In 1990, I gained a Principal’s position and moved to Yeppoon, which is by Rockhampton. I stayed for three years before returning home and taking up a Principal’s position in the Bay of Plenty.
Following this I moved to the wonderful Brookby School for five years, then out to Waiuku School for seven and now I am happy to be settled at The Gardens School (what happened to 20 years?????).
I have taken some time off, but plan to return to my Stage 3 Law studies next year as I feel the school is more settled (don’t worry- it is only one or two papers a year, part-time).
I am a sports nut and now that I am recovering from my back surgery will be able to get back into it (in some much gentler form perhaps, gone are the days … ).
My Virtual Super 14 name is Aardvark and my aim for this year is to beat Mr Williams (and Daniel Clark).

If you get a chance check out the video under photos of the teachers uniform day. Scroll right to the bottom and you will see a bit of hilarity! Photos by Susannah and Michelle and production by Kate- that is why you wil not see any photos of the Senior Management, although there is a school of thought that one was disguised as Queen Elizabeth, one as the ape and one as Lady Gaga!
Make sure you turn up the volume!!
Now that we finally have rain and it has turned rather icy, our students are arriving at school wearing every item of school uniform they possess (just as well layers are in!). That’s great! Keeps them warm! Right up until they, or the weather begins to heat up for the day, then off they come, layer after layer.
It had been a pretty tough week actually! On Monday we were broken into at 6 o’clock in the morning and a laptop computer taken, although it would appear the ‘perp’ was after the data projector. He (or she) dropped their pliers and bolted once the alarms activated. Perhaps that is the new meaning of early morning exercise?
This is surely one of the few jobs where every single day, you get a laugh!
At our school we encourage children to greet us and use their manners. Walking through the playground I am frequently greeted over and over and over and over...... My favourite is the little kids when they try to get their tongue around a greeting and frequently it is from a second language child.
It is very lucky I answer to most things!
I am currently trying to make better use of our website and am doing my best to make meaningful entries onto this blog. It is my aim to add at least one blog per week, so let me know if there are topics you would like me to address, using this forum.
